Gratitude in Foreign Language Learning

Studies on positive emotions in language learning have increased over the years. However, gratitude, a moral virtue, which may novel effect foreign language, remains underexplored applied linguistics. This paper aims to know antecedents of gratitude and its constructs English as context. Nineteen were generated create survey questionnaire called Foreign Language Gratitude Scale, 4-point Likert rating scale. An open-ended question was also added gain qualitative data. Convenience sampling used collect data from 240 undergraduate students. Descriptive statistics results showed that participants very grateful all situations survey, specifically for their improved outputs corrections initiated by teachers. Further, principal component analysis explore underlying dimensions gratitude. Two factors elicited – reinforcement practice. The first factor includes following situations: encouraging students do better, appreciating students’ output, correcting mistakes, using media resources learning, sharing practical knowledge, providing examples practices, treating equally, activities, managing classroom effectively. second are having fluent speakers, doing productive opportunities, ideas, better output. Other coded include promoting collaborative work, gaining comprehension success, teacher acts, designing out-of-class activities. Finally, implications suggestions future studies presented.
